Regrets

Carrying this burden upon bare skin,
naked apathy swallows whole
any ingenuity a new direction holds.
Burning chains, invisible and inconceivable
to the world encompassing, buried secrets
so deep, their ink tattoo marred
in pale serenity.

And still, head held high
continuing as if nothing in the world
matters more, than this moment
this second,
it’s mine.
What’s gone is gone, links forged in regret
carried, lamented, added, remembered
with respect-a mistake never to be repeated.

In the quagmire there is clarity,
a stillness, although chilling
brings with it some respite.
Once, it would have served as an anchor.
What’s gone is gone,
links forged in regret
can be used to feign freedom.

  1. A strong resonating piece Shan….’What’s gone is gone, links forged in regret
    carried, lamented, added, remembered
with respect-a mistake never to be repeated.’ ~ thoughtful & engaging…

  2. Engaging opening grabbed me and forced me to read on. The third stanza defies my comment, it is so good I would not wish to spoil it.

  3. At the center of the storm is calm but there is always more storm to come. The only way out is to fly. Hope you can fly free from such a dark place. Beautiful poem. Well done, again Shan. Thanks for linking today. So pleased to have people reading Sam’s fine piece. It was certainly enlightening for me.

  4. you are, hands down, the best poet of our times! as always, the emotions pour out of your words. beautifully done, Shân!

    {love your hair!} ♥

  5. Adrift is a road, a door … and in not knowing you seem better able to wrap your arms around the heart of the matter.

  6. Where does one start with a piece such as this. Again, the fantastic image is the perfect spring board for this potent, free verse. There is a passion here, and when read aloud, you can’t help but really feel it! You’ve won the office poetry share today, poet! This one I’m sharing beyond the dimension of the world wide web! 🙂

  7. feigned freedom is not really that either…some marvelous imagery in the opening…the tattoo…the first 3 lines open with a wicked flow as well that jerks you into the river…

  8. The illusions we weave…

An enthralling bit of a free verse, with a powerful ending. A layered message speaking to bits of the human experience…

  9. A powerful piece, with a very strong, central image, I particularly like the sense of dignity, and awareness of self this shows, despite the burden of regrets, so there is a transformative affect..very inspiring actually, for someone who has only very recently returned to writing poetry, after an extended break, your poem, for reasons I can’t quite express, encourages me to consider perhaps delving, a little more bravely, into expressing more personally…thank you for sharing.

  10. I feel such a sadness and recognition of an error made here. But also gives me a glint of hope. Powerful stuff, dear heart. Thanks for the read.

  11. I could relate to this one, Shan… it’s stunning!
The last coupla lines were deeply piercing… but the truth usually is that way.. isn’t it?

    Beautifully written, girl..
    xoxo
