Greed

On plush leather chairs,
And air conditioned avarice,
They sit and decide our fates.
These suits.
These heirophants of ettiquette.

Below in the streets,
People fight for aid sent
from overseas.
They throw money at the armed
well muscled guard.

Begging,
Mercy,
My child is ill.
My family starves.

Coffee is served.
With ginger biscuits.
Ties are loosened,
And money exchanged.
Not pennies,
Like below.

Uncomfortable laughter.
As consciousness
becomes a figment
and a bank balance.
A memory.

  2. “As consciousness becomes a figment and a bank balance a memory” I think your poem paints an accurate portrait of what many are now living through.

  3. First rate protest poetry. It’s time for the poets to raise their voices again for truth, justice, equality. Power and greed are always in cycle seeking to corrupt our society. Thanks, Gay @beachanny

  4. This sadly is a worldwide reality that too many are unaware of.
You penned it with such a perfect picture of the disparity between the two realities
